Purpleâwhiteâpinkâwhiteâpinkâwhiteâpurple.
But both necklaces were looking good.
âAre you excited about starting school?â Alfie asked, poking the hard end of the pink necklace cord through her striped bead.
âYeah. No. Kinda,â Hanni admitted.
âMe too,â Alfie said. âOnly with me, itâs more like nervous. I guess I wish we had a girl teacher, not a boy one.â
Most of the teachers at Oak Glen Primary School were women, but Mr. Havens was definitely a man. A very large man. Alfie wondered suddenly if it ever bothered the boys, having girl teachers most of the time. She had never thought about it before.
âI know,â Hanni said. âIâm scared heâs gonna shout at us like he does on the playground, when heâs coaching basketball.â
âBut EllRay says heâs really nice, deep down inside,â Alfie told her, trying to be fair.
âYuck. Who cares what heâs like inside?â Hanni asked, frowning as she searched for another round white bead. âIf his outside is all yell-y and strict, second grade is gonna stink. Period.â
âI bet the boys are happy heâll be our teacher,â Alfie said, thinking about it.
âMaybe. But who cares if boys are happy or not?â Hanni asked, shaking her head and pursing her lips as she worked. âYou only think of weird stuff like that because you have a brother, Alfie. I guess that kind of warps a girl.â
âI guess,â Alfie said. But she was glad she had a brother. âThat reminds me,â she said.
âDonât tell me,â Hanni joked. âYou want to go downstairs and visit the kitties again.â She gave a comical sigh.
âNot really,â Alfie said, fibbing. âBut EllRayâs picking me up later this afternoon, and I donât want him to know Iâm bringing Princess home. Heâs the only one in my family who doesnât know about her, see,â she added, the fib flying out of her mouth as easy as anything. âAnd I want it to be a surprise for everybody at the same time.â
Okay, Alfie scolded herself. Now she was flat-out lying to Hanni, her brand-new friend. âNice,â as EllRay would say. And none of the Sobels knew she didnât have permission to bring Princess home.
But Princess needed her!
âWe could find a kitten-sized box and decorate it,â Hanni said, eager to take on another craft project. âWe could even punch air holes in the top. You could tell EllRay itâs just a pretty box to keep stuff in. Heâll never guess whatâs inside. Boys,â she added with a snort meant to show how little they noticed things.
âI donât know,â Alfie said, her forehead wrinkling as she thought. âUsually, punching air holes in a box is kind of a giveaway about whatâs inside.â
âYou could say itâs a lizard,â Hanni said.
âThen heâd want to see it for sure,â Alfie told her.
âSo we wonât punch any air holes in the box,â Hanni decided aloud. âPrincess will be fine for just one block.â
âBut what if she meows?â Alfie asked.
âTalk real loud the whole time,â Hanni advised her. âOr ask your brother to explain a video game or a movie plot or something.
